The Southern Cross Austereo, owner of 2Day FM who is responsible for the prank call, released a statement to TMZ:
“SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital.”
In addition to the company’s expressed regrets at hearing the news, the SCA’s CEO has announced that hosts Greig and Christian and their show would be removed from air indefinitely.
“SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy,” the statement reads.
The CEO adds that they are “deeply saddened” by the ways things have played out.
As we previously reported, Jacintha was found unconscious on Friday morning and was unable to be revived. People were quick to link the staffer’s apparent suicide with a prank call Greig and Christian made to the hospital, pretending to be the queen.
The radio hosts have also removed their Twitter accounts after receiving an abundance of hate messages from users blaming their stunt on Jacintha’s death.
“I hope the nurses family take @MelGreigHot30 and @mcontheradio for all they have,” one user wrote.
Another added, “I hope you’re happy with yourselves @MContheradio and @MelGreigHot30 Royal prank my arse #RIP.”
In response to all the drama surrounding the story, Prince William and Princess Kate have released this statement:
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha … Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”
